Search and Filter: On the collection page, you can search the collection using the search bar on the left-hand side of the table. You can also filter by geography, date range, and object category using the drop-downs below the search.
More Information: To find more information about a particular object, click on its row in the table. Navigate to the Search and Filter Box on the left side of the page. At the top of the Search and Filter Box, you will see Info. Click Info and more information that is associated with the row you’ve selected in the table will appear.
Below is information on each of the columns displayed in the collection table or in the search and filter sidebar :
Date – Date of object
Date Range – The collection is categorized using the following Date Ranges: pre-1825, 1825-1885, post-1885
Description – Detailed description of object
Image Link – Link to the object image on Colenda
Location – Creation location or relevant location of object
Person(s) – People or persons associated with object
Object Category – The collection is categorized using the following terms in combination with these eras: Arts & Professions, Family & Personal Life, Mercantile, Military, Public Service, Religious, Slavery.
Object Type – The collection has been categorized using these terms: Advertising Objects, Art, Books, Documents, Militaria, Miscellaneous, Monetary, Photography, Playing Cards, Trade and Business Cards.
Colenda, the University of Pennsylvania Libraries’ image repository is continuously adding more images of objects in the Kaplan Collection of Early American Judaica. As the images become available, we will link to them from our collection page. Creating high-resolution images of delicate objects takes time. If you wish to see a specific object that is not currently online, please contact the University of Pennsylvania Libraries.
The collection displayed on this site differs in a few key ways from what is displayed on Colenda. First, on this website comes directly from the collector’s database and has not been cleaned, modified, or edited by the University of Pennsylvania. The descriptions tend to highly detailed and there is more metadata associated with each object than what can be found on Colenda. The flexible search that this site offers reflects reflects these extensive descriptions and detailed metadata. To learn how to use this site, see the question below, “How do I use this website?”.
Also, Colenda, which only displays data for which there is an image, the collection that you see here is the entirety of Kaplan Collection of Early American Judaica (with the exception of the most recent acquisitions). Please note that collection and associated data are works in progress with new items added frequently.
This website serves as one way to navigate and explore the 13,000+ pieces (and counting) of Judaica that comprise the Kaplan Early American Judaica collection and link them to their high-resolution, downloadable images on Colenda, the University of Pennsylvania Libraries’s image repository.
