Manuscript Annual Report of the Hebrew Education Society of Philadelphia, circa 1850

A single-sheet manuscript, circa 1850, constituting the annual report of the Hebrew Education Society of Philadelphia. The report includes a list of officers and board members elected for the ensuing year, among them Solomon Solis (President), Moses A. Dropsie, and Isaac Leeser. It also contains a treasurer's report and notes donations, including one from the Portuguese Congregation. This original document, found among Isaac Leeser's papers, was likely intended for publication in "The Occident." The report details the society's activities, including the opening of its first school in 1851 at the Phœnix Hose House on Zane (now Filbert) Street. The Hebrew Education Society of Philadelphia, organized July 16, 1848, was one of the oldest such societies in the United States. Its charter, granted April 7, 1849, authorized the establishment of schools for general and Hebrew education, and a superior seminary.
