Minutes of the Building Committee, Congregation Mickveh Israel, Philadelphia, 1859-1860
Handwritten manuscript notebook containing the minutes of the Building Committee of Congregation Mickveh Israel in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from January 2, 1859, to May 30, 1860. This meticulously kept record documents the construction of the congregation's new synagogue on 7th Street above Arch Street. The minutes detail meetings, discussions with contractors and architects, and decisions related to the building's design and construction. The notebook includes a list of committee members, prominent figures in the Philadelphia Jewish community, and members of the Board of Managers, including Abraham Hart as Parnas. The final meeting notes express gratitude to the contractor and architect. The cornerstone was laid on May 9, 1859, and the building was dedicated on May 24, 1860. The manuscript is in excellent condition with normal aging. The construction of this synagogue is further detailed in the work "The Jews of Phila." by Morais, published in 1894.
