[Marcus Loeb first worked as a clerk in Indiana before moving to the South, eventually settling in Palatka, Florida, where he established a successful store and saloon. He was involved in various business ventures, civic activities (serving as mayor), and the Masonic order. His store was destroyed in the great Palatka fire of 1884. After suffering losses from a freeze in his orange groves, he relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1898 to start a clothing factory.].
