[Marcus Loeb first worked as a clerk in Indiana before moving to the Carolinas and then Palatka, Florida in the late 1870s or early 1880s. He opened a small store and saloon, and later became involved in Palatka's civic and political life, including serving as mayor. His store was destroyed in the great fire of 1884. In 1898, he moved his family to Atlanta, Georgia, where he established a successful clothing factory, Marcus Loeb and Company.].
