Trade Card - Stern Brothers, New York, circa 1885

This die-cut trade card is shaped like a stocking. The front features pink and white stripes and ornate red script text asking, “What Shall we put in the Childrens Stockings? See inside.” The interior of the card, on a pale tan background, advertises a wide array of goods sold by Stern Brothers at attractive prices. Items for children include French and German dolls, doll's outfits, fancy stationery, lace articles, gloves, mittens, and handkerchiefs. For gentlemen, the card lists smoking jackets and robes, umbrellas, canes, slippers, gloves, mufflers, neckwear, and handkerchiefs. Ladies' items include costumes, cloaks, Paris and Vienna fancy goods, fur garments, bric-a-brac, dress silks, velvet, jewelry, dress goods, Russia leather goods, Alexandre Kid Gloves, toilet articles, handkerchiefs, lace goods, and painted satin articles, all in endless variety. The back of the stocking is marked "Stern Bro's Christmas Stocking." The business name, "Stern Brothers," is presented in a decorative script font on the interior.
