This document is a partially printed Sutler's Script, issued by M. B. Breitenbach, the sutler for the 12th Michigan Infantry, from Jackson, Michigan, on March 1, 1866. It serves as an order to the U.S. Paymaster to pay M. B. Breitenbach twenty-nine dollars ($29.00), to be deducted from the final pay of Sergeant Hull M. Cross upon his mustering out of the U.S. Army. Sergeant Cross attests to having bought goods in good faith and requests the deduction. The document also notes $1.30 due to Sergeant Cross from the U.S. Government. The form features a pre-printed layout with handwritten details, including a blue stamped or printed "$29.00" within a decorative oval at the top left and the prominent printed text "PAYMASTER U.S.A." and "PAY TO M. B. BREITENBACH," with the latter in bold, capitalized lettering.
