Subject: Jewish Societies

A six-page pamphlet cataloging the first four publications of the American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), issued in Washington City, U.S.A., in 1896. The catalog lists the contents of each publication (AJHS Publications Nos. 1-4, 1893-1896), prices, availability, and includes a list of the society's officers, goals, and an excerpt from its constitution. The pamphlet indicates that only a few copies of the first publication remained at the time of its printing. It contains bibliographical references on pages [4-6]. The original paper wrappers measure 19 cm. OCLC lists only one paper copy (held by Indiana University).

This pamphlet contains the constitution and by-laws of the United Hebrew Beneficent Society of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as of March 1, 1861. Founded in 1822, the Society aimed to provide relief to the poor and sick within the Jewish community, including procuring medical attendance, medicine, and burial services. The Society also worked to apprentice poor children to trades and promoted Hebrew education. This particular copy belonged to Reverend Isaac Leeser, with his signature on the cover and the "Leeser Library, Hebrew Education Society" stamp on the title page. The pamphlet includes a complete roster of officers and members.

Customs House receipt issued to Tobias, T. I. in New York, New York on February 7, 1835, for $65. Tobias was a member of Hebra Hased Vaamt, a mutual aid society, and active in other Jewish societies.

A letter written by Matilda Cohen to Isaac Leeser on November 10, 1858, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Cohen apologizes on behalf of the H.H.B. Society for not sending Leeser a special invitation to their anniversary meeting.

A receipt issued on January 21, 1872, in Corry, Pennsylvania, to Jacob Berliner for membership dues to the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith, Ahaveth Sholem Lodge. The reverse side contains accounting information for dues paid by other members.
